Carer Learning and Development

One thing that sets Key Assets apart is the level of support we provide to our mātua whāngai/foster carers.

Support That Helps You Care With Confidence

Fostering can be deeply rewarding, but it can also bring challenges. At Key Assets, mātua whāngai/foster carers are supported with practical guidance, specialist knowledge and trusted relationships throughout their journey.

Our role is to help you understand the needs of mokopuna in your care and give you the tools, confidence and support to respond with patience, consistency and aroha.

Carer Learning and Development

You do not need to know everything before becoming a foster carer. We will help you build the knowledge and skills you need.

Your learning begins with a two-day pre-assessment training programme and continues after you are approved. Training covers trauma-informed and therapeutic approaches to care, helping you understand how experiences mokopuna go through may shape their behaviour, relationships and needs.

Ongoing learning and development will help you:

  • understand and respond to trauma
  • build safe, trusting relationships
  • support identity, whakapapa and whānau connections
  • respond to different behaviours and additional needs
  • advocate for mokopuna in your care
  • care for your own wellbeing while supporting others

Training is practical, ongoing and shaped around the realities of fostering.
