Who can foster?

Foster parents come from all walks of life and they’re all different, just like the children and young people they care for. We welcome foster carers of any gender, marital status and cultural identity. Our recruitment process is always fair and supportive as the most important thing to us is your ability to provide a safe, supportive and caring environment for children and young people. There are a few things you should consider before applying to foster with us:

  • You need to be over 25
  • You must have space and bedrooms for each child placed with you
  • You need to commit to fostering on a full-time basis
  • You must have genuine enthusiasm for helping children and young people
  • You need to be able to cope in difficult and sometimes stressful situations
  • You must be willing to learn about fostering

Our service areas include:

  • Auckland and all surrounding areas
  • Hamilton and all surrounding areas
  • Tauranga
  • Rotorua
  • Christchurch
  • Northland up to Hikurangi

If you are located outside of these areas, please contact Oranga Tamariki or visit https://www.orangatamariki.govt.nz/

Rewarding our foster carers

We understand the financial implications that foster care brings. That’s why we provide all our carers with a fostering allowance that covers the cost of caring for children and as recognition for their hard work.
